During a disaster, hospitals and health systems may experience staffing shortages as staff are required to stay home as caregivers, may be required to self-quarantine in cases of a pandemic, may become sick themselves or may also be fearful of reporting to work. All of these issues can create staffing gaps in critical areas just as hospitals and health systems are struggling to manage an expected patient volume increase during the disaster.

For more than 20 years, COPE Health Solutions, through its COPE Health Scholars program, has trained and deployed over 34,000 non-licensed individuals across 21 partnered health systems throughout the country. Scholars and alumni can be utilized to support the needs identified by a health care system in-house or remotely to alleviate the surge of demand in workforce in times of disasters. There are more than 34,000 alumni from the Health Scholar program. Many are now nurses, physicians, social workers and administrators.
